Analysis of Kanye West Stronger.

Kanye West's music video demonstrates the general codes and conventions of a standardised rap music video, for example he wears expensive jewellery and visuals of fast cars and women to be gazed upon. Something that Kanye West is no secret too, however this music video happens to have many intertextual references to the 1988 film Akira. This can be seen in the visuals of him being scanned by some sort of machine which is also seen in the film Akira. The video also has direct links to the lyrics. This can be seen where the song plays the sample of the "harder better faster"  by Daft Punk by showing Daft Punk within the video. Another example of this is where Kanye West says "i know god put you in front of me" and he looks directly at the female interest in the video. The song has a futuristic feel which may be the reason which may be the reason why he chose to include the intertextual references of Akira. Although i believe Kanye had a lot of says in the video,...

Evaluation

Planning the planning stage of my work I believe happened to go very well. I started off by analysing music videos that I felt inspired by whilst simultaneously reading upon the theories of Andrew Goodwin and carol Vernalis to then link them to said videos. The things I analyse were the codes and conventions of these genres and the reasons why things were done in the video. For example, I explained why asap rocky used certain editing techniques to represents his experience with drugs and so forth. Moving forth from this point I created a questionnaire to help influence the video I wanted to make. This questionnaire helped the video to some degree. Admittedly I believe I could have asked better questions but the questions I asked still helped the video. An example of a question helping was the question of where I asked people what they enjoyed about music videos and what they enjoyed about the last music video that they watched. This me streamline the shots that I wanted with my client ...

Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut: Functions and Meanings of Music Video Editing

Carol Vernallis Carol Vernallis  theory is similar to the theory of Andrew Goodwin. However, there are quite a few differences. There are four main parts  Narrative: Vernallis says that the link between narrative and performance are not always balanced. By this she means that the narrative can sometimes be incomplete or fragmented for different reason. A reason can be choice meaning that the musician/artist has decided not include certain details in the work for whatever reason. In my case the carrying on song has different dark rooted themes in the song but for the sake of the video doing well from an audience perspective, it's best to leave it alone, an example of a narrative feeling fragmented is Childish Gambino music video for his album "Because The Internet" and more importantly the video "3005". The video shows Gambino on a Ferris wheel with him and teddy bear with the teddy bear becoming more and more damaged as the video progressed and by the end of the...

Music Video Analysis - Kendrick Lamar - Alright

Analysis of song  Analysis of video Kendrick Lamar depicts the tale of the harsh reality that bear upon black people within many parts of America. To themes of black struggle and love and to what feels like a never ending with the police, these are the many themes that is used within alright video.  Introduction Within the beginning of the video, Lamar uses the establishing shot of the Oakland-Bay bridge as a framework for the subsequent visuals and messages — entirely in monochrome to contrast “black” and “white” — and messages; he also uses the establishing shot as a microcosm for American society as we explore the meaning of what it is to be black in America — contextualized by Lamar's narrative — and how he copes with his racial identity. For the next minute and a half, images of an apocalyptic Oakland are shown to the viewer in a way that suggests the end is near — a belief that Kendrick Lamar completely shares. Among these images is one of three people standing a...

Andrew Goodwins Music theory

The Concept: According to Andrew Goodwin's music video theory, every music video includes the following eight elements: Links between the music and the visuals: If a song is very electronic and energetic, the director may include a dance sequence to fit the style. This is also valid when it comes to music video editing. these eight principles are: Links between the music and the visuals:  If a song is very electronic and upbeat the director may include a dance sequence to reflect the style. This is also the same in regard to the editing of a music video. If a song is very slow the cuts between shots may also be slow Links  between the lyrics and the visuals:  Music videos will often illustrate props or actions in the mis en scene that reflect the lyrics of a song. An example of this would be the music video for Vance Joy’s Rip tide which literally displays visuals that directly link to the lyrics. This is clearly seen in "L$D" (A$AP Rocky 2015) as lyrics of ta...

FInal Music Video

Planning and editing music video

Introduction The song I have decided to work with is a song by a close friend, Harrison Powers, that's titled "Carrying On".  they're so many reasons as to why I've decided to work with this song. After closely analysing the deeper contextual meanings behind the song with my friend I later discovered that the song has deeper meanings of alcoholism and moving and growing past the addiction that comes with it. I believe we are able to link many visual ideas to the song as well keeping the song fresh and creative to align with his musical persona he would like to portray to a general audience. The video we want to create is a simple yet effective that will drive the song further to an audience without mentioning the deeper meanings as we believe they're too personal and will end up making the video  Planning After talking to my client we finally decided that it will be best to go for a rather conventional music video that establishes different stylistic traits th...

Music Video Analysis - A$AP ROCKY - L$D

Analysis Of song Meaning Rakim Athelaston Mayers better known as his stage name A$AP Rocky presents a drug fuelled psychedelic ballad which portrays his many experiences with the class A drug   Lysergic acid diethyl amide or LSD For short. Throughout the song   Rocky alludes as a girl to LSD throughout the song which can be seen with the opening verse of the song. One of the many effects of LSD as a psychedelic is dynamic, coloured hallucinations and the induction of a strong euphoria, which can last for over four hours. LSD is often portrayed as a girl named Lucy – mainly because of the assertions not received that LSD inspired the Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Rocky may be rapping under the influence of LSD, as he praises its consequences on his mind and body or rapping about a girl for whom he has feelings. He has drug like addictions toward this female, even if LSD is not addictive. While LSD means "love, sex, dreams," this is a part of Rocky...

Focus Groups

What is a Focus Group A focus group is a moderated discussion group of six to ten people. Each participant is chosen after completing a screener questionnaire, which allows the researcher to ensure that a good mix of people represent the project's target audience. Before conducting a focus group, the facilitator will create a discussion guide to ensure that participants cover topics of interest to the researchers. A focus group typically lasts about an hour and a half and is occasionally observed by researchers and members of a larger project team using a one-way mirror. In conventional market research, focus groups are used to collect target consumer views and perceptions regarding specific goods, services, or principles. A company may use a focus group to gather customer feedback on a new product or service before moving forward with development. A focus group can be used in this context to test ideas and gather feedback on whether the idea will be liked or needed by the target a...

Easy rider response

Easy rider response  Within this scene, a variety of different techniques that range  from editorial techniques to audi o techniques   is used  to convey the emoti on of boredom  and portray the image of what substance  potentially  abuse feels like for the audience. The scene begins with a still eye-level shot with diegetic  sound, which potentially could be some construction,   of 4 adults who appear to be spending there day within a cemetery .  From the moment this scene opens, the body language that these  actors portray implies that they have reached a dead-end within their lives;  I would go as far as to say that they appear to be going through some  sort of existential  crisis. What drives this point even f urther is the lack of movement from the camera and sound  with the addition of the restlessness of the characters sitting down as if  they are  longing for something to happen with...
