Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut: Functions and Meanings of Music Video Editing

Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis theory is similar to the theory of Andrew Goodwin. However, there are quite a few differences. There are four main parts

Narrative:

Vernallis says that the link between narrative and performance are not always balanced. By this she means that the narrative can sometimes be incomplete or fragmented for different reason. A reason can be choice meaning that the musician/artist has decided not include certain details in the work for whatever reason. In my case the carrying on song has different dark rooted themes in the song but for the sake of the video doing well from an audience perspective, it's best to leave it alone, an example of a narrative feeling fragmented is Childish Gambino music video for his album "Because The Internet" and more importantly the video "3005". The video shows Gambino on a Ferris wheel with him and teddy bear with the teddy bear becoming more and more damaged as the video progressed and by the end of the video its seen that a man has been watching the whole time. It is not explained why this is happening, the viewer has to depict and create theories by themselves. Vernallis also states that the narrative may not be the real reason why the music video is driven but the music itself and the visuals are simply used to support the music its self. This can be seen in many standardised rap videos where the artist is not doing anything particularly special.

Editing

vernallis says that editing in music videos doesn't follow the conventional rules that regular cinema follows. For example, the rule of continuity editing is broken in many music videos to draw attention to the music video. Another thing that she states that editing of visuals may be the real driving force in the music video. An example of this will be the L$D video where the editing is one of the main driving points of the video. The editing in the song relates to the lyrics like stated in goodwins theory but its mainly used to attract the viewers' attention. Also in vernallis theory she states the states that most videos have a main footage that is used to catch the audiences' attention. An example of this will be the "Baby one more time" by britiney spears. in this video you can see the video of her the in corridor mutiple times which will then help drive the narrative of the film

Camera movement and framing

Carol Vernallis says that shooting is one of the main features of a music video and often used in a video and close up shots. The video's framing style, once again, is quite distinct, and the camera may move in time with the lyrics. Extreme shots are also known as master shots are also quite common. extreme shots are seen in asap rockys lsd video where the camera moves in manic motion where the camera will move in manic motions  speeding up and slowing down.

diegesis

The world of video music is diegesis in media. Carol Vernallis explains how diegesis is slowly revealed. The video actions will not always be finished and may somehow be interrupted. The video will repeat several times, and some frames will be more important than others because of the way they were shot/framed.

Music Video Analysis - Kendrick Lamar - Alright

Analysis of song  Analysis of video Kendrick Lamar depicts the tale of the harsh reality that bear upon black people within many parts of America. To themes of black struggle and love and to what feels like a never ending with the police, these are the many themes that is used within alright video.  Introduction Within the beginning of the video, Lamar uses the establishing shot of the Oakland-Bay bridge as a framework for the subsequent visuals and messages — entirely in monochrome to contrast “black” and “white” — and messages; he also uses the establishing shot as a microcosm for American society as we explore the meaning of what it is to be black in America — contextualized by Lamar's narrative — and how he copes with his racial identity. For the next minute and a half, images of an apocalyptic Oakland are shown to the viewer in a way that suggests the end is near — a belief that Kendrick Lamar completely shares. Among these images is one of three people standing a...

Analysing genre specific editing techniques

Individual approaches and styles are used to show different genres of cinema during editing. The way these genres are edited changes the way we think about the tale and our emotions shift as a result of the strategies utilised; it catches and draws the audience in. Fast-paced editing is frequently employed in horror films. This is done to create suspense and make the audience nervous and anxious about what will happen next. They're anticipating being astonished or scared by the next quick-cut shot. The most typical shot in these types of films is a low shot. In the shots of chosen characters, low shots evoke anxiety. They intimidate people, exude authority, and believe they are superior to the other characters in the picture. In horror films, the use of high shots and close-up shots denotes vulnerability, usually in the victims. 'One Missed Call' is an example of a film that effectively employs these strategies. The victims are plagued by inexplicable phone calls in which t...

Analysing Promotional Video - Meet iPhone 12

Analysing Promotional Video - Meet iPhone 12  Context within apple commercials, the main focus within them are to promote and sell their products to the audience and do this by showing their products in various aspects of life. In this iPhone 12 advert this is exactly what has been done here. As you cans see within the advert, the phone is being used in different day-to-day scenarios that are relatable to an audience. For example, to show the speed of the phone the footage of real life is slowed and the phone speed is normal to show in a hyperbolic way that the phone is faster than life. Such hyperbolic creative shots like this is what makes the advert memorable to an audience. This is something i want to incorporate into my work  as this is a very efficient way to market a product.  Sound Non-Diegetic:   An upbeat soundtrack can be heard to match the pacing of the video. This can also be in relation to the speed of the phone. a gust of wind can be heard when the pho...
